Styxosaurus is anextinct species of marinereptile from the end of theLate Cretaceous period millions of years ago.Styxosaurus was a commonplesiosaur in the waters ofprehistoricSouth Dakota, where it fed on a variety ofvertebrates, such asfish. They grew up to 40feet (12meters) long.[1]
It lived alongside creatures like the more famousDolichorhynchops. Its closest relative wasPlesiosaurus from theJurassic period.
WhenStyxosaurus existed, so didTylosaurus,Elasmosaurus,Archelon,Hesperornis,Xiphactinus, andMegacephalosaurus.
Styxosaurus has appeared inJurassic Worldvideo games and thedocumentaryfilmSea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure.
It also appeared in the filmKing Kong, where it was named as anElasmosaurus in the movie.[2]Plesiosaurus is aspecies of plesiosaur that appeared in the filmSon of Kong, though it was named once again asElasmosaurus.[3]
In 2024Mattel plans to release atoyStyxosaurus.[4]
