Stoke-on-Trent was the home of thepottery industry in theUnited Kingdom. It was a very important exporter in the late 18th, the 19th and up to about 1960. It is commonly known asThe Potteries. The industry was killed off by cheap Chinese pottery after theSecond World War, and by the even cheaper plastic homeware.
Coal was its other employment. The furnaces of thekilns needed coal. Coal was also a commodity which was exported from the area.
