Sternum

Thesternum orbreastbone, invertebrateanatomy, is aflat bone. Inamphibians andreptiles it is normally shaped like ashield, often made ofcartilage. It isabsent in bothturtles andsnakes. Inbirds it is larger, and has largeflightmuscles attached to it.[1] Only inmammals does the sternum take on the longer form seen in humans.
