Stafford is thecounty town of theceremonial county ofStaffordshire inEngland. It is situated around 16 miles (26 km) north ofWolverhampton, 18 miles (29 km) south ofStoke-on-Trent and 24 miles (39 km) north-west ofBirmingham.

The town's 2011population of 68,472 makes it the fifth largest town inStaffordshire by population, behindStoke-on-Trent,Tamworth,Newcastle-under-Lyme andBurton-upon-Trent.

The name Stafford means"ford" by a"staithe" (a landing place).

The town is famous for theStafford knot, sometimes called theStaffordshire knot. It is a distinctive three-loopedknot that is the traditional symbol ofStaffordshire and Stafford itself. It is used by many local organisations on logos and buildings and also gives its name to apub.

The town has a busyrailway station on theWest Coast Main Line. The station provides direct local trains toCrewe,Liverpool,Stoke-on-Trent,Wolverhampton andManchester, longer-distance trains toLondon,Carlisle,Glasgow andEdinburgh, and cross-country trains toManchester andBristol.

Sports

The town has a semi-professionalfootball club,Stafford Rangers, who currently compete in theNorthern Premier League Division One North West. They play their home games atMarston Road.
