Further information:Chinese language

TheMandarin Chinese name of Shanghai isShànghǎi,[a] which is written as上海 inChinese characters. This name means "On-the-Sea" because Shanghai used to be next to theEast China Sea. Today, dirt from theYangtze River has madePudong much bigger anddowntown Shanghai is about40 kilometers (25 mi) from the open sea. The city has become so big, though, that itsgovernment now controls other areas like Pudong andFengxian that are still beside the sea.

Shanghai's name is a little simpler than most other Chinese cities' names, because it was a smallfishingvillage for a long time. Theshort way to say its name in Chinese is still[a] (). A hu was an old kind of fishingtrap that was made withbamboo andnets. The people around Shanghai used to use them to catch fish andcrabs inSuzhou Creek and other waterways.

Geography

Shanghai is at the mouth of theYangtze River, where it meets theEast China Sea in the middle ofChina's eastcoast. Downtown Shanghai is located just south of the place whereSuzhou Creek meets theHuangpu River. This is about20 kilometers (12 mi) southwest of where the Huangpu meets the Yangtze River. The area between downtown and the Yangtze used to befarmland and other cities likeWusong andBaoshan, but now Shanghai is so big that they are part of it.

Under the Ming and the Qing, people from other countries could only buy and sell things with China on an island nearGuangzhou. TheBritish effectively controlled Shanghai from the mid 19th century until World War II. Parts of Shanghai were controlled by theUK, theUS, andFrance. This control was ended by theJapanese duringWorld War II.
