Early years and beginning ofFamily Guy

MacFarlane went to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), aschool inRhode Island where he studiedanimation. He made a shortcartoonmovie named,The Life of Larry during his senior year. He worked atHanna-Barbera writing and makingepisodes ofJohnny Bravo.FOX, amedianetwork, sawThe Life of Larry and offered him $50,000 to make apilot.

Political views

MacFarlane is a supporter for theDemocratic Party.[2] In 2015, MacFarlane revealed support forBernie Sanders on the2016 U.S. presidential election, and he introduced Sanders on a Los Angeles rally.[3]

September 11 attacks

On the morning ofSeptember 11, 2001, MacFarlane was scheduled to return to Los Angeles onAmerican Airlines Flight 11 from Boston. After having ahangover from last night's celebrations,[4] and after getting his departure time incorrectly (8:15 a.m. instead of 7:45 a.m.) from histravel agent,[5] he arrived atLogan International Airport about ten minutes too late to board the flight as the gates had been closed.[5] Fifteen minutes after departure,American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked,[6] and at 8:46 a.m. it was flown into the North Tower of theWorld Trade Center, destroying the airplane, and killing everyone on board.[7]

MacFarlane has been nominated for twenty-four Primetime Emmy Awards for his work onFamily Guy and has won five times, in 2000, 2002, 2016, 2017 and 2019.[8] He has been nominated for five Grammy Awards for his work inFamily Guy: Live in Vegas,Music Is Better Than Words,Family Guy,No One Ever Tells You andIn Full Swing.[9][10][11] He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for co-writing the opening song, "Everybody Needs a Best Friend", from his filmTed with the film's composer Walter Murphy.

He has received numerous awards from other organizations, including the Annie Award for Best Voice Acting in an Animated Television Production and the Saturn Award for Best Television Presentation for theFamily Guy episode titled "Blue Harvest", the MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Duo and the Empire Award for Best Comedy forTed. In 2019, MacFarlane received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6259 Hollywood Blvd. In 2020, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.[12]

In 2022, a new species ofHyloscirtus frog (Hyloscirtus sethmacfarlanei) was described from Ecuador and named after him.

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage

In August 2011, Fox ordered a 13-part updated series ofCosmos: A Personal Voyage. MacFarlane willco-produce with Anne Druyan and Steven Soter. It will behosted byNeil deGrasse Tyson. The series wasbroadcast on Fox in 2014.[13]
