TheScheldt is a 435-kilometre-long (270 mi) river that flows through northernFrance, westernBelgium, and the southwestern part of theNetherlands, into theNorth Sea. In French, the river is calledEscaut, in Dutch and in German, it is calledSchelde. Its latin name isScaldis.The Scheldt is an importantwaterway. Boats can get up toCambrai. From there they can get on to theCanal de Saint-Quentin. TheScheldt–Rhine Canal connects it to theRhine.
