InAncient Rome, aprovince (Latin,provincia, pl.provinciae) was the basic and, until around 300, largest territorial and administrative unit of the empire's territorial possessions outside of thepeninsula ofItaly. The wordprovince in modernEnglish came from the term used by the Romans.
