Robert Badinter (French: [badɛ̃tɛʁ]; born 30 March 1928) is aFrenchcriminal law lawyer, university professor, politician and activist of Jewish descent. He is against the death penalty, the abolition of which he successfully sponsored in Parliament in 1981. A member of theSocialist Party (PS), he served asMinister of Justice and then President of theConstitutional Council underFrançois Mitterrand.
