Robert Alphonso Taft (September 8, 1889 – July 31, 1953) was anAmerican politician for theRepublican Party. He was the son of PresidentWilliam Howard Taft. He served as the Senator ofOhio from January 3, 1939 until his death in July 31, 1953. Taft was also the Senate Majority Leader from January 3, 1953 until his death on July 31, 1953. He is thought to be one of the greatest Senators in American history.[1] He ran for President four times from 1940, 1944, 1948, and in 1952.
Taft was born on September 8, 1889 inCincinnati,Ohio.[2] He studied atTaft School, atYale University and at theHarvard Law School. Taft was married to Martha Wheaton Bowers from 1914 until his death in 1953. They had four sons. Taft died on July 31, 1953 in a hospital inNew York City,New York from acerebral hemorrhage, aged 63.
