Aroad is a piece of land which connects two or more places. Usually, a road has been made easy totravel on. For example, by removingtrees andstones so the ground is morelevel. Although, many roads are made ofgravel anddirt, some are paved withconcrete orbricks orstones.

People have been making roads for a long time.Roman roads in Britain and theInca road system are famous.Transport by boats onwaterways was usually easier and faster than transport by road. In theindustrial revolution, therailway was invented. A railway is a special type of road, usingrailway tracks. Roads are now usually made forwheeled vehicles, likecars, to travel on.

Whentraffic jams becomes a frequent problem, the road may be made wider or other roads built.

Road building and care is usually paid for bytaxes. Some roads aretoll roads, where people pay to use the road.
