Ripon is a smallcathedralcity inNorth Yorkshire, England. In the 2001census Ripon had a population of 15,922.[2] In England onlyWells,Ely and theCity of London are smaller.
Ripon was one of the boroughs reformed by theMunicipal Corporations Act 1835. It stayed a borough in theWest Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. Under theLocal Government Act 1972 it became a parish in the borough ofHarrogate,North Yorkshire. Because it is an urban (town) parish Ripon can call its parish council Ripon City Council, the chairman of its parish council is called the City Mayor.
