Richard Henry Carmona (born November 22, 1949)[1] is an American physician, policeofficer,public healthadministrator, and politician. He was the 17thSurgeon General of the United States. Carmona was chosen as Surgeon General byPresidentGeorge W. Bush in 2002. He left office at the end of July 2006 at the end of his term. After leaving, Carmona was highly critical of theBush administration.
In August 2006, Carmona returned home toTucson, Arizona.[2] In November 2011, he said he would try to become theDemocratic Party's choice forUnited States Senate.[3] He won the nomination, but lost the election toJeff Flake.
