TheRepublic of Korea Navy also known as theSouth Korean Navy, is the naval warfare service branch of theSouth Koreanarmed forces.
It has about 70,000 people including 29,000 Republic of KoreaMarines. There are about 140 ships. The navalaviation force consists of about 70 aircraft. The ROK Marine Corps has about 300 tracked vehicles including assaultamphibious vehicles.
During theJapanese occupation of Korea, theImperial Japanese Navy built a big naval base at Chinkai Guard District in southern Korea (at present-day Jinhae). The present navy was started in 1945. Korea had a long naval history, going back to the 4th century, before that.
