Proportionality

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the corresponding concept related to ratio, seeProportions.

Aproportionality relationship happens when twoquantities ornumbersx andy are related multiplicatively by a fixed number. This can occur when either their ratiox/y is a fixed number (direct proportionality), or their productxy is a fixed number (inverse proportionality). Ifx is directly proportional toy, then we writexy{\displaystyle x\propto y}.[1] The fixed number of a proportionality relationship is called the constant of proportionality.[2][3]
