Pope Hyginus

PopeHyginus was the eighthPope of theCatholic Church (the official title isBishop of Rome). He served around 138–142AD. Hyginus was a Greek born inAthens.[1]

He served as Pope during theheretical teachings of theGnostics. Heresy is a belief or opinion that does not agree with the official belief or opinion of a particular religion. The Gnostics taught thatYahweh, (the Old Testament name for God) andJesus Christ were two different Gods. This was against the Catholic Church teachings. Hyginus declared these men, Valentinus and Cerdo, to beheretics.[2]

Pope Hyginus died amartyr. He was made aSaint by the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on January 11.[3]
