Aphotographer (fromGreek φῶς (phos), meaning "light", and γραφή (graphê), meaning "drawing,writing", together meaning "drawing withlight") is someone who isskilled at takingpictures or photographs with acamera. Anamateur photographer takes pictures for their own use. Aprofessional photographer takes pictures as all or part of their job. Many people hire a photographer for theirwedding,debutante party or other special events. Photographers work in many different specialties.[1][2][3]
There are several different kinds of photography.[4] Each type requires a different set of skills. Some examples include:
Anews photographer can take photographs quickly whenevents are rapidly changing. They act as the "eyes" for theirpublications.[5] Their job is to take as many photographs as they can so aneditor can later select the best ones for the story. Theycorrect photos withsoftware, addcaptions, and send them to their editors. Many news photographers also shoot rapid sequences of film as shortvideos.[5]
Astill life photographer takes pictures ofstill life orinanimate objects.[4] This can be foradvertising,art orscience. The subjects may befood, products, ornature studies. Still life photographers must know how to uselighting,angles and have other skills to make an object look as good inmovies as it does in real life.
Acombat photographer is usually, but not always, amilitary occupation. They takedocumentary photographs and videos for many different uses. They may be involved inreconnaissance,training or supporting writers who write stories for publication.[7] Depending on what part of the military they are in, they often have highly specialized duties.
Aportrait photographer takes pictures of people.Portraits aim to capture the personality of the subject. Styles include Boudoir, engagement, High School Senior, newborn and family portraits.[8]
