Pau is acommune in southwesternFrance, in theregion ofNouvelle-Aquitaine. It is theprefecture (capital) of thePyrénées-Atlantiquesdepartment. It is also the capital of 6cantons in the department:Jurançon,Pau-Centre,Pau-Est,Pau-Nord,Pau-Ouest andPau-Sud.

Pau is the second city of Aquitaine, afterBordeaux. Pau was also the capital of the oldhistoricalprovince ofBéarn.

Pau is at about190 km (120 mi) fromBordeaux and fromToulouse, on a 200 m elevation overlooking the valley of a mountain river called theGave de Pau, and at100 km (62 mi) from theAtlantic Ocean and at50 km (31 mi) from thePyrenees.

It has an area of31.51 km2 (12.17 sq mi) and its averagealtitude is205 m (673 ft); at thecity hall, the altitude is210 m (690 ft).[1]
