Rice is grown on terraces, in Pana Banaue, Philippines.

Paddy fields are places in whichsemiaquatic plants, such asrice andtaro can be grown. These fields are filled with shallowwater at least part of the year. Growing these plants is very labor-intensive. A lot of water is needed. Paddy fields started next to theYangtze River in China, in theNeolithic era. Later, their use spread to other areas inAsia. Paddy fields are built next tomarshes or using terraces, on a hillside.

Deepwater rice is not grown using paddy fields. It needs water over50 centimetres (20 in) deep for at least a month.
