Oxalate (also known asethanedioate) is asalt orester ofoxalic acid. It is also anion of oxalic acid. It is aconjugate base ofhydrogenoxalate. Thechemical formula isC2O2−4 when it exists as an ion itself. It is formed when oxalic acid dissolves inwater (which splits into an oxalateanion and twohydrons). Oxalate salts and esters are colourless.
