Negotiation

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alternative dispute resolution

Anegotiation is a formaldiscussion to reach an agreement about a matter. It is an important method toreduce or resolve conflicts.[source?] Examples of negotiations include:

  • Twohostilenations both claim a piece ofterritory. They may go towar over it. Or, they maynegotiate someagreements orpeace treaties. The agreement would be written down, and bothgovernments would agree to keep the agreement.
  • A football club wishes to buy a player from another club. A series of negotiations would take place between the clubs, the player and the player's agent. If the negotiations succeed, the player gets moved. In this case, and in many others, success is followed by alegalcontract, or acourt decision, which makes the agreement legal.
  • Under less formal circumstances, a negotiation is justbargaining orhaggling over, such asmoney.
