(Redirected fromNanometer)
"Nm" redirects here. For the U.S. state shortened to "NM", seeNew Mexico.

Thenanometre (symbol:nm) is aunit used tomeasurelength in themetric system. It is equal to onebillionth of ametre (1 m / 1,000,000,000) and forkilometre, it is equal to onetrillionth of a kilometre (1 km / 1,000,000,000,000). The name combines theSI prefixnano- (from theAncient Greekνάνος,nanos, "dwarf") with the parent unit namemetre (from Greekμέτρον,[metrοn]Error: {{Lang}}: Non-latn text (pos 5: ο)/Latn script subtag mismatch (help), "unit of measurement"). It can be written inscientific notation as 1×10−9 m.

The nanometre is often used to express very tinydimensions, such as measuringatoms. The nanometre is also commonly used to measure thewavelength ofelectromagnetic radiation near the part of thespectrum that can be seen by humans.Visible light ranges from around 400 to 800 nm.[1]

The nanometre was formerly called themillimicrometre (or themillimicron). This is because it is 1/1000 of amicrometre, and was written with the symbol (or sometimesµµ).[2][3][4]
