Amunicipality is a word used for acity, atown or avillage, or a small group of them. It has a clearly definedterritory, and all the people living on that territory share one commonlocal government.

In mostcountries, a municipality is the smallestadministrative subdivision to have its owndemocratically elected representative leadership. A municipality is usually governed by amayor and a city ormunicipal council. The municipality can be created as amunicipal corporation.

The word used may be "commune" (for example,Frenchcommune,Italiancomune orSwedishkommun),canton,district, civilparish orborough.
