Monterey County is acounty located on thePacific coast of theU.S. state ofCalifornia. As of the2020 census, the population was 439,035.[4] Thecounty seat and largest city isSalinas.[5] Monterey County comprises theSalinas, California,Metropolitan Statistical Area. It borders on the southern part ofMonterey Bay, after which it is named. (The northern half of the bay is inSanta Cruz County.) Monterey County is a member of the regional governmental agency: the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments.

History

Monterey County was once part of the4,426-acre (17.91 km2)Rancho Pescadero Mexican land grant. In 1860, businessmanDavid Jacks bought the Rancho, then sold it in 1880 to thePacific Improvement Company.[6]
