Mildred Dresselhaus (bornMildred Spiewak; November 11, 1930 – February 20, 2017), also known as the "queen of carbon science", was anAmericannanotechnologist. She was the first femaleInstitute Professor and professor emerita of physics and electrical engineering at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology. She also won many awards including thePresidential Medal of Freedom, theNational Medal of Science, theEnrico Fermi Award and theVannevar Bush Award.
Dresselhaus was born inBrooklyn,New York. She was married to Gene Dresselhaus and had four children. She was ofJewish descent.[1]
Dresselhaus died on February 20, 2017 inCambridge, Massachusetts, at the age of 86.[2]
