Meze ormezze 'totaste',[1][2][3] is the name for a number of small dishes or appetizers served before ameal, often with a drink. The food is common in theEastern Mediterranean. Drinks includeanise-flavored liqueurs, such asarak,ouzo,raki or differentwines. These dishes are similar to thetapas ofSpain orfinger food.
InLevantinecuisines and in theCaucasus region (especially inArmenia andGeorgia), these dishes are served as a part of any large-scale meal.[4] Not accompanied by alcohol, meze is known in theArab world asmuqabbilat (Arabic for "starters").
