Marmande is acommune in southwesternFrance, in theregion ofNouvelle-Aquitaine. It is asub-prefecture of theLot-et-Garonnedepartment,capital of thearrondissement ofMarmande. It is also the capital of 2cantons in the department:Marmande-1 andMarmande-2.

Marmande is on the right side of theGaronne river, at about64 km (40 mi) to the northwest ofAgen and71 km (44 mi) to the southeast ofBordeaux.

It has an area of36.88 km2 (14.24 sq mi) and its averagealtitude is72 m (236 ft); at thecity hall, the altitude is30 m (98 ft).[2]

Marmande is asubprefecture of theLot-et-Garonne department since 1790. It is also the capital of thearrondissement ofMarmande and theadministrative centre (French:chef-lieu) of 2cantons:[5]

  1. Marmande-1, formed with a part of Marmande and nine othercommunes, with 18,503 inhabitants(2014).
  2. Marmande-2, formed with a part of Marmande and ten othercommunes, with 17,833 inhabitants(2014).

It is part of theintercommunalityVal de Garonne (French:Val de Garonne Agglomération).
