Macedonia (ancient kingdom)

Macedonia (Greek: Μακεδονία) orMacedon was an Ancient Greekkingdom of theArchaic andClassical Greece,[1] and later the most powerfulstate ofHellenistic Greece.[2] The kingdom was established and was at first ruled by the royalArgead dynasty, which was followed by theAntipatrid andAntigonid dynasties. Home to theancient Macedonians, the earliest kingdom was centered on the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula,[3] and bordered by Epirus to the west, Paeonia to the north,Thrace to the east and Thessaly to the south.

Alexander the Great made it the most powerful kingdom in theNear East for a few years. When he died the empire fell apart and theAntigonid dynasty ruled Macedonia as a small empire. Centuries later theRoman Empire conquered Macedonia and much of Alexander's empire.
