Lower Egypt is the fertileNile Delta region, which stretches from the area betweenEl-Aiyat andZawyet Dahshur, south of modern-dayCairo, and theMediterranean Sea.

Lower Egypt was known asTa-Mehu which means "land of papyrus." It was divided into twenty districts callednomes. Lower Egypt was mostly undevelopedscrubland, undeveloped for human life and filled with all types of plant life such asgrasses andherbs.

Theclimate in Lower Egypt is milder than that ofUpper Egypt. Temperatures are less extreme and there is more rainfall.

The capital of Lower Egypt wasButo. Its patron goddess was the cobra goddessWadjet. Lower Egypt was represented by the Low Red CrownDeshret, and itssymbol was thepapyrus.
