The department is one of the 83 French departments made during theFrench revolution, on 4 March 1790. The department was created from part of the former province ofOrléanais together with small parts of other provinces.
The new department had sixdistricts: Blois, Vendôme, Romorantin, Mondoubleau, Mer and Saint-Aignan. Thecapital (nowprefecture) wasBlois.[4]
In 1800, with the creation of thearrondissements in France, the six districts were changed into threearrondissements: Blois, Romorantin and Vendôme.[4]
After theBattle of Waterloo (18 June 1815), the department was occupied by thePrussianarmy from June 1815 to November 1818.
On 10 September 1926, thearrondissement of Romorantin was eliminated but in 1943 it was made again anarrondissement.[4] In 1961, Romorantin was merged with Lanthenay and the name, of thecommune and of thearrondissement, was changed to Romorantin-Lanthenay.
Theaverage amount ofprecipitation for the year in Vendôme is604.5mm (23.8in). The month with the most precipitation on average is October with58.4mm (2.3in) of precipitation. The month with the least precipitation on average is February with an average of40.6mm (1.6in).
The average temperature for the year in Vendôme is10°C (50°F). The warmest month, on average, is July with an average temperature of18.9°C (66.0°F). The coolest month on average is January, with an average temperature of1.7°C (35.1°F).

Loir-et-Cher has a population, in 2014, of 333,567,[3] for a population density of52.6 inhabitants/km2. Thearrondissement of Blois, with 173,125 inhabitants, is by far the largest.[8]
