Elle Woods is asorority sister living at theDelta Nu House at thefictional California University Los Angeles (CULA) (based on the realUniversity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)) where she studies in "FashionMerchandising" and has a 4.0Grade Point Average. Elle'sboyfriend, Warner Huntington III, the son of aU.S. congressman,breaks up with her the night she expects him topropose formarriage, claiming that he needs "to marry aJackie, not aMarilyn", meaning that Elle is not a serious person for awife and for hiscareer.
