Kumamoto Prefecture (熊本県,Kumamoto-ken) is aprefecture in theKyūshū region ofJapan on the island ofKyushu.[1] Thecapital city isKumamoto.[2]
The area ofHigo Province was renamed Kumamoto during theMeiji Restoration.[3]
Kumamoto Prefecture is in the middle ofKyūshū The western border of Kumamoto is theAriake Sea and theAmakusa Islands.Fukuoka Prefecture andŌita Prefecture are in the north.Miyazaki Prefecture is in the east.Kagoshima Prefecture is in the south.
Mount Aso (1592 m) is anactive volcano in the eastern part of the prefecture.[7]
National Parks are established in about 21% of the total land area of the prefecture,[8] including
Aso-jinja is the chiefShinto shrines (ichinomiya) in the prefecture.[9]
