Kagoshima Prefecture (鹿児島県,Kagoshima-ken) is aprefecture ofJapan on the island ofKyushu.[1] Thecapital city isKagoshima.[2]

History

Kagoshima Prefecture is made from theold provinces ofŌsumi andSatsuma, including the northern part of theRyukyu Islands.[3]

During theSengoku period andEdo period, Ōsumi was controlled by theShimazu clan of Satsuma.

This region played a key role in theMeiji Restoration. Important historical figures from Kagoshima areSaigo Takamori andTōgō Heihachirō.[4]

Geography

Kagoshima bordersKumamoto Prefecture andMiyazaki Prefecture. It is in the southern part ofKyushu facing thePacific Ocean.

National Parks

National Parks are established in about 9% of the total land area of the prefecture.[9]

Shrines and Temples

Kagoshima jinja,Hirasaki jinja and NittaHachiman-gū are the chiefShinto shrines (ichinomiya) in the prefecture.[10]
