John Robert Bolton (born November 20, 1948) is anAmerican lawyer and diplomat. He was the 26thUnited States National Security Advisor from April 9, 2018 through September 10, 2019. He has served in severalRepublican administrations. Bolton served as theU.S. ambassador to the United Nations from August 2005 until December 2006 as arecess appointee by PresidentGeorge W. Bush. John Bolton advocated thesecond war with Iraq.[1][2] Heresigned in December 2006.

On March 22, 2018, PresidentDonald Trump announced his appointment asNational Security Advisor, to take office on April 9, 2018.[3]

On September 10, 2019, Bolton turned in his resignation to the Trump administration.[4]

Amember of the Republican party, hispolitical views have been described as Americannationalist,[5][6]conservative,[7][8][9][10] andneoconservative.[11] Bolton rejects the lastterm.[12]

Bolton has openly thought about the idea of running for president in the2024 United States presidential election to win theRepublican nomination against former President Donald Trump.[13][14][15]
