Her best known role was as Bessie Watty in themovieThe Corn Is Green (1945), starring alongsideBette Davis. She was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role.
Lorring was born Mary Magdalene Ellis inHong Kong. She was raised there by her mother until 1939 following theJapanese invasion. They later settled inSan Francisco,California. She used the name "Dellie" when she worked onradio.
Lorring was married to Martin Sonenberg, an endocrinologist fromNew York from 1956 until his death in June 2011. The couple had two daughters, Andrea and Santha.
Lorring died fromnatural causes on May 30, 2014 inSleepy Hollow, New York, aged 88.[1]
