Jaynagar Majilpur (orJaynagar) is a town and a municipality of theSouth 24 Parganas district in theIndianstate ofWest Bengal. It is in the southern suburbs ofKolkata. The city is in the area ofGreater Kolkata. It is a part of the area covered by theKolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).[1] The city is very famous for the confectionery calledJaynagarer Moa.

Jaynagar Majilpur is located at22°10′31″N88°25′12″E /22.1751965°N 88.4200762°E /22.1751965; 88.4200762. The average elevation of this city is8 metres (26 ft).[2]

The district is in theGanges Delta and the southern part is covered by theBaruipur-Jaynagar Plain.Archaeological excavations atDhosa andTilpi, on the bank of thePiyali River show people were living there around 2,000 years ago.[3]

People

During the2011 Census of India, there were 25,922 people living in Jaynagar Majilpur. 13,234 (51%) of the people were males and 12,688 (49%) were females. There were 2,277 people younger than 6 years old. There were 20,898 (88.38%) people who were older than six years old who could read. Most of the people live in the towns.[4]
