Jane Smiley (born September 26, 1949) is anAmericannovelist.[1] She won thePulitzer Prize for Fiction. That was in 1992 for her bookA Thousand Acres (1991).
Smiley published her first novel,Barn Blind, in1980. She won a1985O. Henry Award for hershort story "Lily". "Lily" was published in theAtlantic Monthly.[2]
Smiley was elected a member of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Letters in2001. She participated in the annualLos Angeles Times Festival of Books, theNational Book Festival and several others. She wonPEN USA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
Smiley's most recent books are atrilogy ofnovels about anIowa family over the course of generations. The first book of the trilogy,Some Luck was published in2014 byRandom House. The second volume was in the spring of2015. The third volume was in the fall of 2015.[3]
Smiley was born nearLos Angeles, California. She was raised next toSt. Louis,Missouri.
Smiley received the Fitzgerald Award for American Achievement in2006.
