TheIndian Act ("An Act respecting Indians"), is aCanadianstatute that concernsregistered Indians, theirbands, and the system ofIndian reserves.[1][2] It was first passed in 1876 and is still in force withamendments. It is the primary document which governs how theCanadian state interacts with the614 First Nation bands in Canada and their members. Throughout its long history, the Act has been an ongoing source ofcontroversy. It has beeninterpreted in many ways by bothaboriginal and non-aboriginal Canadians. Thelegislation has beenamended many times, including "over twenty major changes" made by 2002.[3]
