TheIberian Peninsula, orIberia, is the southwest part ofEurope. Like otherpeninsulas, it is mostly surrounded by sea. To the south and east of the peninsula is theMediterranean Sea. To its north and west is theAtlantic Ocean. It is the third largest peninsula ofEurope with an area of 582,860km². The name Iberia is the Ancient Greek name for the region which the Romans calledHispania.Hispania is now used forSpain, whileIberia is used for the whole region.

The wordIberia was also used by theAncient Greeks andRomans for another territory at the opposite side of Europe,Caucasian Iberia, which is near theBlack Sea.
