Hypobromite is anion. Its chemical formula isBrO−. It containsbromine in its +1oxidation state. It is anoxidizing agent. It is similar tohypochlorite. Hypobromites are thesalts ofhypobromous acid. Hypobromite is adisinfectant. Somewhite blood cellsoxidizebromide to hypobromite withperoxide and use the hypobromite to kill germs. Bromides can be added to pools along with chlorine to make hypobromite, which disinfects the pools.
Hypobromites are made by dissolving bromine in abasic solution. Hypobromitedisproportionates tobromate and bromide when heated.
