Ahuman mission to Mars has been seen inscience fiction since the 1880s, and ofaerospace engineering and scientific proposals since the late 1940s.
Plans include landing onMars for exploration at a minimum, with some thinking about exploring its moonsPhobos andDeimos.
Long term proposals have includedsending settlers and startingterraforming the planet.
Theexploration of Mars has been a goal of national space programs for many years with planned missions typically being stated as taking place anywhere between 10 and 30 years.
