Grenada (/ɡrəˈndə/(listen)grə-NAY-də;Grenadian Creole French:Gwenad) is an islandcountry in theCaribbean Sea that received itsindependence from theUnited Kingdom in 1974. Its capital isSt. George's.

History

Before it was discovered, Grenada was inhabited by indigenous people. In1649, it was colonised byFrance. Over a century later in1763, Grenada was given to theUnited Kingdom.

In1974, Grenada became an independent country led byPrime MinisterEric Gairy. In1983, Grenada was invaded by theUnited States in an effort to stopcommunism on the island.

In2004, a hurricane namedIvan destroyed most of the island's resources. Grenada is called theSpice Island on account of its most famous export, thenutmeg.

Politics

Grenada is amonarchy withCharles III asking. Grenada has aparliament made up of asenate (13 seats) and aHouse of Representatives (15 seats). The senators are appointed by the representatives, who are elected by the people.
