Gothic fiction is a type offiction which combines parts of bothhorror andromance. The genre is said to have started inEngland in 1764 withHorace Walpole's bookThe Castle of Otranto.The Castle of Otranto's second edition was subtitledA Gothic Story.[1] The idea quickly spread to other European languages.
A famous early example of gothic fiction isFrankenstein byMary Shelley, in the early 19th Century.[2]Edgar Allen Poe's work andBram Stoker'sDracula were written later.[3]
