Thegolden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is one of the best-knownbirds of prey in thenorthern hemisphere. It is the most widely distributed species ofeagle. Golden eagles use their agility and speed combined with powerful feet and massive, sharptalons to snatch up prey. They eathares,rabbits,marmots and otherground squirrels.

Once common across theHolarctic, it has gone from many areas heavily populated by humans. The species is still widespread. It lives inEurasia,North America, and parts ofNorth Africa.

Like alleagles, it belongs to the familyAccipitridae. It is one of the largest birds of prey in North America; only theCalifornia condor gets larger. Golden eagles also live in theScottish Highlands.
