Ghosting is anew word referring to thebehavior of suddenly endingcontact with someone.[1]

Origin

Theword emerged in the 2000s,[2][3] in thecontext ofinterpersonal relationships,[2][3] includingdating.[2][3] The word was laterpopularized bysocial media.[2][3]

Causes

The most commoncauses for why ghosting happens are:[4]

  • Political differences
  • Avoidance ofemotional discomfort
  • Hook-up culture making it easier for contact to be cut without consequences[5]

Prevalence

In 2014, a YouGovsurvey was done to see ifAmericans had ever ghosted theirpartner to end a relationship.[6] In that survey, 1,000 US adults wereinterviewed about ghosting,[6] yielding the result that just over 10% of Americans had ghosted someone to break up with them.[6]

Issues

Psychologists arecritical of ghosting as a behavior,classifying it aspassive-aggressive behavior,[4] which is a form ofemotional abuse.[4]
