Friedrich Ebert (4 February 1871 inHeidelberg – 28 February 1925 inBerlin) was aGermanpolitician. He was apart of theSocial Democratic Party (SPD). He wasChancellor ofGermany and its firstpresident during theWeimar period.

Ebert was asocial democrat. He became leader of the SPD in 1913, when the last leaderAugust Bebel died. He was an important part of theGerman Revolution of 1918–19, and when Germany became arepublic he became the first Chancellor. His goal was to make Germany more peaceful. He did this by putting down theLeft-wing andRight-wing revolutions, working with theright-wingFreikorps and the left-wingTrade unionss.

He was Chancellor until he died on 28 February 1925 from Septic Shock.[1] He is praised for helping the Weimar Republic when it had only just been made, but people also say he was wrong for working with the right-wing, and that it helpedAdolf Hitler come to power.
