Existence

It existed at two separate times. The first time was from1890 to1899, and the second was from1920 to1960. In1960 it became the independent nation ofMali.

Beginning

It was created as aFrench territory onSeptember 9,1880 and its name was "Upper Senegal".

The name changed to the "French Sudan Territory" onAugust 18,1890, and its capital wasKayes. OnOctober 10,1899, French Sudan was broken into pieces: 11southernprovinces became part ofFrench Guinea,Côte d'Ivoire andDahomey. However, two provinces were returned in1900.

In1902 the parts of thecolony which were not organised into military districts becameSenegambia and Niger, then the name changed toUpper Senegal and Niger in1904. Finally, the old name of French Sudan returned in a reorganisation in1920.

In1933,Upper Volta stopped existing (It began again in1947.) and French Sudan gained some of itsprovinces.

Independence

After theOctober 4,1958 Frenchvote about theconstitution, the "République Soudanaise" joined theFrench Community, again with the name French Sudan, and it gained complete domestic control on25 November,1958.

OnApril 4,1959, French Sudan was joined withSenegal to form theMali Federation. This became fully independent but still inside theFrench Community onJune 20,1960. This union finished onAugust 20,1960, whenSenegal left. On22 September, French Sudan changed its name to theRepublic of Mali and left theFrench Community.
