Eugen Jochum (German:[ˈɔʏ̯ɡeːn ˈjɔxʊm]; 1 November 1902 – 26 March 1987) is an Germanconductor.
Jochum was born in Babenhausen, nearAugsburg, in the south ofGermany. He soon showed musical talent and was playing theorgan forchurchservices when he was eight. He studied at the Augsburg Conservatory and then the Munich National Theatre and atMönchen-Gladbach. He became conductor of theKiel Opera where, during three years, he conducted more than 50 operas in several German cities. Then, in1934, he followedKarl Böhm andKarl Muck as the conductor of theHamburg Staatsoper. He stayed there until1949. He also was guest conductor inAmsterdam with theConcertgebouw Orchestra and later he became chief conductor.
AfterWorld War II, Jochum became the first chief conductor of theBavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in1949. He often conducted in London with theLondon Philharmonic Orchestra and theLondon Symphony Orchestra. In1975, the LSO gave him the title of conductor laureate.
He appeared regularly atSalzburg and, from 1953,Bayreuth. The first opera he conducted there wasWagner'sTristan und Isolde.
Jochum is remembered especially for his warm, romantic performances ofAnton Bruckner'ssymphonies. He often conducted thepassions ofBach and music by composers such asBeethoven,Brahms,Mozart,Haydn,Schumann,Wagner andCarl Orff.
