
Elwyn Ralph Berlekamp (September 6, 1940 – April 9, 2019) was anAmericanmathematician. He was known for his work incomputer science,coding theory andcombinatorial game theory. He was aprofessoremeritus ofmathematics andEECS at theUniversity of California, Berkeley. He was theinventor of analgorithm to factorpolynomials. He was one of the inventors of theBerlekamp–Welch and theBerlekamp–Massey algorithms. These are used forReed–Solomon error correction.
Berlekamp was born inDover,Ohio. His family later moved to northernKentucky. He was married to Jennifer. The couple had three children.
Berlekamp died on April 9, 2019 inPiedmont, California ofpulmonary fibrosis-related problems, at the age of 78.[1]
