Ebonyi State

Ebonyi is one of the 36 states ofNigeria. The capital isAbakaliki. There are 13 Local Governments in Ebonyi State, namely: Abakaliki, Izzi, Ezza North, Afikpo South, Ohaukwu, Ebonyi, Oniocha, Ishielu, Ezza South, Ikwo, Afikpo North, Ohaozara, Ivo[1]

Background

The state was created on 1 October, 1996, by the then head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha. Ebonyi state is located in the southeast geographical region of Nigeria, and primarily inhabited by the Igbo and the indigenous Orring people who makes up about 10-15 percent of the state population. It shares common with Benue state in the north, Cross River state in the east, Abia state in the south, and Enugu state in the west. The state capital is Abakaliki, Abakaliki is also a Local government area, as well as a larger dialectical zone in the Igbo linguistic and cultural categorization. Ebonyi state has about 4 different linguistic zone in which Abakaliki is just one of them, whose people and mainly the Abakaliki people of Ezza, Izzi, Ikwo, Ngbo and few ithers such as the Ohafia, Agba and Abaomege people; other zones are Afikpo, Igbo-Esa, Ohanivo, and the Orring people who speak Korring language, a semi-Bantiod language speaking in Ebonyi state.[2][3]
